Fiji’s Rising Rugby Star: Could Karawalevu Join the Drua?

Fiji’s Flying Fijians fullback Vuate Karawalevu has drawn attention for his fierce cover defense and precise kicking during the team’s recent victory over Samoa. Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson has indicated that Karawalevu, who hails from Dravuwalu, Kadavu, could potentially join the Drua for the next season.

Karawalevu, a former captain of Marist Brothers High School’s rugby team and a gold medalist in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics, is seen as an asset for the backline. At 23 years old, he previously played for the Kaiviti Silktails in 2021 and represented the Fiji Bati at the 2021 Rugby World Cup. He is currently under contract with the Waratahs for two seasons.

Jackson noted that 14 Drua players participated in the recent match, where Fiji decisively defeated Samoa 42-16 during their first Pacific Nations Cup match on August 23 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

The Drua’s preseason will be held in Kadavu, with plans for renovations at their base to foster a better environment for developing elite players. The return of Joseva Tamani to the club is seen as a significant boost due to his versatility in playing both back row and lock positions.

Recent signings Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou are expected to impact the team positively. Ravai brings considerable experience and mentorship for the front row, while the new center combination of Iosefo Masi and former Racing 92 player Tabuavou aims to strengthen the midfield. Tabuavou recently showcased his skills in his second test appearance against Samoa.

Additionally, new interim general manager Baden Stephenson announced plans for a 10s tournament set for December 13, which aims to be an international event inclusive of Skipper teams.
