In September, the Fiji Police Force reported a total of 118 serious sexual offences. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci identified rape as the most frequent offence, followed by indecent assault, sexual assault, and abduction of minors, among others.
Additionally, Raikaci disclosed that six police officers faced charges for serious offences, which included abuse of office, assault causing bodily harm, fraud, possession of illegal drugs, and wrongful confinement.
The Acting Commissioner pointed out that police officers themselves faced dangers while performing their duties, with 171 officers being victims in 219 reported incidents. These incidents included serious assaults and obstruction of police conduct.
During September, a total of 838 individuals were charged with various offences, including 48 juveniles. The breakdown of offenders showed that 486 were aged between 18 and 35, 266 were aged 36 to 55, and 38 were 56 or older.
Raikaci urged communities to collaborate with the Fiji Police Force in the fight against crime, emphasizing the concerning trend of juvenile crime and its negative impact on education and future prospects. He called for support from families and communities in mentoring young individuals.
As the festive season approaches, the Fiji Police Force plans to intensify operations and encourages everyone to adhere to the law for the safety of all communities.
