Fiji’s Rising Crime: Troubling Trends and Police Challenges Unveiled

In September, the Fiji Police Force recorded 118 serious sexual offences. Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci reported that the most frequently reported crime was rape, followed by indecent assault, sexual assault, and abduction of minors, among others.

Raikaci also noted that six officers faced serious charges, including abuse of office, assault causing bodily harm, and unlawful possession of illicit drugs. He emphasized that police officers themselves were victims of crime, with 171 officers reported as victims in 219 incidents, which included serious assaults and obstruction cases.

In total, 838 individuals were charged with various offences in September, including 48 juveniles. The majority of offenders were aged between 18 and 35 years. Raikaci urged communities to collaborate with the Fiji Police Force to combat crime, expressing concern about the trend of juveniles involved in criminal activities, which adversely affects their future.

As the festive season approaches, he assured that police operations would intensify and called for respect for the law to ensure safer communities.
