In September, the Fiji Police Force reported a total of 118 serious sexual offences. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci noted that the most frequently reported crime was rape, followed by incidents of indecent assault, sexual assault, abduction of minors, and attempts to commit rape, among others.
Raikaci also revealed that six police officers faced charges for serious offences, including abuse of office, assault causing actual bodily harm, fraud, unlawful possession of drugs, and wrongful confinement. Additionally, he pointed out that police officers themselves were victims of crime while performing their duties, with 171 officers reporting 219 incidents. Among these, 33 cases involved multiple counts, including serious assaults and obstruction of officers.
During September, the police charged 838 individuals for various offences, including 48 juveniles. Offenders were predominantly aged 18 to 35 (486 individuals), followed by those aged 36 to 55 (266) and individuals over 56 (38).
Raikaci urged communities to collaborate with the Fiji Police Force in the fight against crime, expressing concern over the involvement of juveniles in criminal activities, which adversely affects their education and future. He called for ongoing support from families and communities to mentor young people.
As the festive season approaches, the Acting Commissioner announced that the police would intensify their operations and encouraged everyone to respect the law for the safety of all communities.
