Keleto Takele, a boxer from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), clinched the gold medal in the 57–60kg category at the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing final held at LICI Court in Suva. Takele secured his victory by defeating his fellow RFMF teammate, Rusiate Qalo, through a points decision.

Despite Takele’s success, it was ultimately the Fiji Police Force that dominated the boxing competition overall that night. Reflecting on his triumph, Takele expressed gratitude, stating, “I thank God for the win, and we didn’t have an easy preparation for this competition.” He highlighted the hurdles faced during their month-long training camp, which included suboptimal nutrition and grueling early morning runs.

Takele dedicated his victory to his father and family members who supported him, as well as to his comrades in the Army. He noted that his spiritual preparation was a key motivator in building resilience during tough training sessions. This victory marks an important milestone in Takele’s boxing journey, as it is his first year participating in the sport and his seventh match since joining the Army Boxing Club.

Originally from Navunikabi, Namosi, Takele was introduced to boxing by his brother, who is also a trainer and boxer. He emphasized the importance of discipline, focus, humility, and determination in boxing, countering the misconception that boxers are arrogant. Takele encouraged young people to consider taking up boxing, promoting it as a means of self-defense and a way to maintain fitness.

This achievement not only elevates the profile of boxing within the military community but also inspires youth to engage in physical activities that promote resilience and discipline.

In summary, Takele’s victory at the Ratu Sukuna Bowl showcases his determination and the importance of hard work and spiritual grounding in achieving success in competitive sports. His message advocates for youth engagement in boxing, highlighting its benefits beyond the ring. This positive narrative encourages a healthier, more disciplined lifestyle among young people.
