Keleto Takele, a boxer from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), clinched the gold medal in the 57–60kg division at the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing final held at Suva’s LICI Court. He secured his victory by defeating fellow RFMF boxer Rusiate Qalo by points.
Despite Takele’s success, the overall boxing competition was dominated by the Police, who emerged as the leading team in the event. Takele expressed his gratitude, stating, “I thank God for the win, and we didn’t have an easy preparation for this competition.” He reflected on the rigorous month-long training camp that pushed him and his fellow boxers to their limits.
Describing the Ratu Sukuna Bowl as a prestigious event between the RFMF and the Fiji Police Force, Takele acknowledged the challenges of preparation, including inadequate nutrition and intense early morning training. He dedicated his victory to his father, family members who supported him, and his army colleagues at camp.
As a newcomer to boxing, having participated in only seven matches since joining the Army Boxing Club, Takele attributed his resilience in training to his spiritual preparation. He mentioned his roots in the village of Navunikabi, Namosi, and how his brother, a trainer and boxer, inspired him to pursue boxing within the army.
Takele emphasized the positive values associated with the sport, aiming to counter the misconception that boxers are arrogant. He highlighted that boxing is fundamentally about discipline, focus, humility, and determination. He encouraged young people to engage with boxing, not only for self-defense but also to maintain their fitness.
This inspiring narrative showcases the dedication and commitment shown by young athletes in Fiji, reinforcing the importance of discipline in sports and encouraging positive engagement in physical activities.
In summary, Takele’s gold medal victory serves as a reminder of the value of hard work, perseverance, and community support, while also promoting boxing as a pathway for youths to adopt a disciplined lifestyle.
