Two talented Fijian boxers, Ben Williams and Elijah Qiokata, are in line to represent their country at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, as announced by Fiji Amateur Boxing coach Cam Todd. Currently, they are part of Team Fiji’s amateur boxing contingent in New Zealand, gearing up for an Invitational Competition set for this weekend.
Both Williams and Qiokata are in their first year as senior elite boxers, an important step in their careers. Williams will compete in the 65 kg category, while Qiokata is set to represent Fiji in the 70 kg division. According to Coach Todd, this competition serves as an excellent opportunity for them to sharpen their skills against quality international opponents, enhancing their readiness for future challenges, particularly the Commonwealth Games.
The upcoming competition is also significant for Jasmine Dakunakamakama, Fiji’s elite female boxer, who will compete in the 60 kg category. Todd emphasized the importance of providing her with competitive opportunities, stating, “She doesn’t get any competition in Fiji, so it’s essential that I get her competition.” He anticipates that participation in such events will pave the way for her potential involvement in the Commonwealth Games as well.
While expressing enthusiasm about his young team, Todd acknowledged the challenges posed by financial constraints, which often limit the opportunities for talented athletes. Despite these hurdles, he remains optimistic, believing that the experience gained in New Zealand will be instrumental in building their confidence for larger international competitions moving forward.
The commitment to developing young talent has been a recurring theme in Fiji’s boxing narrative, with ongoing preparations for both local and international events. In previous reports, an increased grassroots involvement and significant achievements in competitions have been highlighted, showcasing the promising future for Fijian boxing. Coach Todd’s approach emphasizes the continuous growth of the sport and includes efforts to enhance both male and female participation in the boxing community.
As Team Fiji continues to forge ahead in their journey, the collective hope is that these experiences will yield competitive success for the country on the world stage. The ongoing support from the local community and the dedication of both the athletes and their coach are poised to inspire the next generation of Fijian boxers.
