The second athletics trial for the Pacific Mini Games held in Palau attracted a robust turnout last Saturday at HFC Bank Stadium. Over 100 athletes from various schools and clubs across Fiji participated, showcasing a growing interest in athletics among the youth. This event not only served as an essential stepping stone for national hopefuls aiming for qualification but also prepared high school athletes for their respective zone competitions.
Errol Bernard Qaqa, a hurdles athlete representing Team Fiji, expressed his satisfaction with the increased participation compared to the first trial. He noted, “The biggest improvement is the turnout. We’ve seen more athletes and a lot of high school students pushing their limits.” This enthusiasm was particularly evident among Western-based athletes from Nadi and Lautoka, whose impressive performances indicated that they were not only close to qualifying for their zones but also for the Mini Games.
The trials featured nationally recognized athletes, including Helena Young, known as Fiji’s secondary school sprint queen, who led the women’s open sprints. Meanwhile, several high school athletes demonstrated their potential to compete at higher levels. Officials from Athletics Fiji reported notable improvements in various disciplines including 100-meter times, as well as jumps and throws.
The ongoing preparation for the Pacific Mini Games reflects a collective effort within Fiji’s sports community. With the next trial scheduled during the Easter Games, which is anticipated to attract even more participants, there is a palpable sense of excitement and hope surrounding Fiji’s athletic representation.
Fiji’s commitment to nurturing young talent and providing platforms for athletes to excel not only fosters individual growth but also enhances the nation’s profile on international sport stages, reminding us of the importance of encouragement and support within athletic communities. The upcoming competitions are likely to infuse renewed energy and determination among athletes as they strive for success in Palau.
