Fiji’s Rice Revival: How a $150K Grant is Changing the Game

Fiji’s rice industry is set to receive a boost with a grant of $150,000 from Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu to Fiji Rice Ltd. Minister Rayalu emphasized the importance of this funding in transforming rice production in the country.

He stated, “This significant investment aims to enhance our rice industry.” The minister explained that the initiative is essential for increasing local rice production and reducing dependence on imports. Currently, 88 percent of rice consumed in Fiji is imported at a cost of $42 million, highlighting the need for this financial support.

The grant will assist in covering the costs of farming inputs, making rice cultivation more accessible and economically viable for both new and existing farmers. Rayalu aims to boost paddy production by an additional 480 tonnes this season.

Farmers who receive the grant are required to supply 80 percent of their rice paddy to Fiji Rice Ltd, securing a consistent supply of locally grown rice for supermarkets. This project reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening Fiji’s agricultural sector and enhancing food security.

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that farmers can apply for the grant online or visit the Fiji Rice Mill offices located in Dreketi and Labasa.
