Fiji’s RFMF Reassesses Role Under Civilian Authority

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is actively reassessing its historical role in the political landscape of the nation. During a recent session in Parliament, Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua acknowledged that the military’s past interventions contributed to political instability and highlighted the need for a comprehensive review of the RFMF’s responsibilities under the Constitution.

Minister Tikoduadua emphasized that this review seeks to redefine the RFMF as a professional institution that operates under civilian authority. This effort involves a thorough evaluation of command structures, leadership expectations, and internal decision-making processes to ensure they align with contemporary defense standards. “To describe this phase of work, we must think of it as ‘clearing a lens,’” he explained, indicating that the military needs to reassess its perspective, which has been clouded by a history of conflict and internal challenges.

The initiative encourages structured reflection and acknowledgment of past actions, aiming to engage impacted communities and develop a clearer understanding of the RFMF’s role. By achieving this clarity, the institution aspires to operate with greater stability and fewer misconceptions.

Tikoduadua pointed out that the RFMF has already started implementing changes based on its reflective process. Enhancements include bolstering support services, improving discussions around discipline and conduct, and increasing engagement with the families of those affected by earlier military actions. The minister firmly noted that any behaviors associated with past instabilities will not be tolerated in future operations.

Furthermore, the Government is committed to observing the RFMF’s reconciliation process closely. However, Tikoduadua clarified that this does not involve directing the military’s internal workings but rather ensuring that the process upholds the Constitution and respects the rights of all citizens. The Government’s involvement will focus on promoting transparency, enhancing professional standards, and aligning the RFMF’s activities with national expectations.

This introspective approach signals a hopeful new chapter for the RFMF as it seeks to honor its past while fostering a future grounded in stability, professionalism, and community engagement.
