Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Ro Jone Kalouniwai has reassured the public that no weapons or ammunition are missing after recent attempts to gain unauthorised access to military facilities, describing the incidents as unsuccessful and the security of RFMF stock as intact.

The military confirmed that unknown individuals made attempts to access certain establishments within the past two weeks but were thwarted by existing security measures. “Due to the robust security systems in place, these attempts were unsuccessful,” Commander Kalouniwai said, adding that a thorough inspection and stock-take had been completed. “The RFMF can categorically confirm that no weapons, ammunition, or related equipment are missing.”

The Fiji Police Force is leading the investigation into the breaches, with the RFMF providing full cooperation, the commander said. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the exact locations targeted or the number of incidents, but emphasised they are treating the matter seriously and pursuing inquiries through law enforcement channels.

Commander Kalouniwai also announced a comprehensive review of security arrangements across military installations. “The RFMF views this matter with the utmost seriousness and will not take these attempts lightly. A comprehensive review of existing security measures is being undertaken to further strengthen safeguards across all installations,” he said, signalling potential changes to procedures and physical security in the weeks ahead.

He sought to reassure the public that there is no immediate risk to civilian safety. “There is no threat to public safety arising from this incident,” Commander Kalouniwai said, underscoring the RFMF’s commitment to maintaining “the highest standards of security and vigilance.”

The announcement is the latest development in a period of heightened attention to security matters in Fiji. In recent months authorities have faced scrutiny over weapons management and transparency, including isolated discoveries of firearms and ammunition in civilian locations that prompted police inquiries. The current investigation and the RFMF’s stock-take are likely to be watched closely by lawmakers and the public alike as officials seek to demonstrate accountability and prevent any future breaches.

Investigations are ongoing, and officials have indicated further updates will be provided as inquiries progress and the review of security measures is completed.
