As Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai enters the final year of his term as Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), he has issued a heartfelt call to soldiers to embrace values-based leadership. During the End of Year Parade, he emphasized the growing trend of materialism, which he believes is undermining the moral principles of the younger generation.
Kalouniwai underscored the importance of patience, selflessness, compassion, charity, and principled leadership as the essential cornerstones for sound judgment and humanity within the ranks. He took a moment to reflect on the RFMF’s reconciliation efforts aimed at addressing its historical issues and rebuilding trust, despite some narratives dismissing these initiatives as ineffectual.
The Commander noted that Fijians are currently witnessing a complex landscape that includes both corruption and abuse, alongside the positive influences of unity, forgiveness, and peace. However, he pointed out that rising public expectations often cloud the perception of genuine progress.
Highlighting achievements over the past three years, Kalouniwai spoke of a renewed focus on core responsibilities that led to unprecedented defense engagements and significant developments in capability and capacity, all in line with the RFMF Five-Year Strategic Plan Beyond 2022.
In a personal tribute to his service, Major-General Kalouniwai expressed deep pride in leading the RFMF, stating, “I am proud to have led such inspiring and incredibly talented young men and women. You are supported by experienced, well-educated leaders with a vision of a professional institution that every Fijian can trust and rely upon.” He encouraged members to continue striving for what is right, supporting each other, and maintaining faith.
Before concluding his address, he extended warm wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all RFMF personnel and their families, reinforcing a spirit of community and dedication as they move forward together.
