Fiji is gearing up for a transformative recycling initiative that is set to enable residents to earn money by returning plastic waste. The Return and Earn Fiji program, launching next year, will empower citizens to return PET bottles and aluminum cans of any brand and receive a five-cent reward per container. This initiative aims to significantly curb littering and bolster recycling efforts throughout the island nation.
According to Dwain Qalovaki, a representative for Return and Earn Fiji, the program is a community-driven, industry-funded initiative designed to streamline the recycling process and make it more rewarding for participants. He noted that the non-profit organization will oversee the collection and processing of beverage containers, ensuring that these materials are directed to processing facilities on both Viti Levu and Vanua Levu before being handed over to certified recyclers abroad.
As part of its implementation, the program plans to establish a network of at least 50 buy-back collection sites nationwide, with the full rollout anticipated by mid-next year. The government, represented by Permanent Secretary for Environment Dr. Sivendra Michael, is working to finalize container deposit regulations that will support this initiative and enhance the overarching recycling framework.
