The Government of Fiji is making significant progress on the relocation project for Nabavatu Village in Dreketi, Macuata, with plans to build the first 10 homes at the new site by July. This initiative aims to provide stable and disaster-resistant housing for 37 families who were previously affected by the devastating impact of Tropical Cyclone Ana in January 2021. Minister for Rural, Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, shared these updates during his recent visit to Savadrua Village.

The construction of these homes was initially delayed due to material inaccessibility, but Minister Ditoka confirmed that cement will be poured into the first column of construction next Wednesday. The relocation project is part of a broader initiative funded by the Green Climate Fund, with an estimated total cost of approximately $5.9 million that was approved by the Cabinet last February.

The project’s background highlights the severe impact that the cyclone had on the Nabavatu community, which forced 38 families to temporarily relocate to tents in Savadrua. After ongoing assessments and input from the Ministry of Lands and the Department of Environment, a new site was identified that spans 16.88 hectares, roughly 800 meters from the original village.

The relocation project will see the construction of 37 homes, of which the remaining 27 are expected to be completed by December. This initiative underscores Fiji’s commitment to disaster resilience and provides a model for future relocation projects within the country.

As families look forward to moving into their new, safer homes, this project not only brings a sense of stability but also embodies the strength and unity within the Nabavatu community, which has remained resilient in the face of adversity. The hope for a brighter future is palpable as families anticipate a return to sustainable living conditions.

This development serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of governmental support in recovery efforts, showcasing both the need for swift action in disaster response and the collective strength of communities overcoming hardship together.
