The Fiji Rental Car Association is urging the government and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to promptly address serious challenges impacting the rental car industry. President Mohammed Shafik emphasized these issues during the Association’s Annual General Meeting held in Suva, citing troubling trends such as escalating operational costs, stringent regulations, and unfair penalties that threaten the sustainability of rental businesses.
A primary concern raised by Shafik is the age limit imposed on rental vehicles, which he describes as a blanket policy that ignores the actual roadworthiness and maintenance of the vehicles. He indicated that this regulation coerces well-maintained vehicles off the road, creating a lack of affordable and practical alternatives for operators.
Furthermore, Shafik pointed out that traffic fines often remain on an operator’s record even when the driver is at fault, complicating essential business transactions like vehicle transfers. He also highlighted the challenge posed by illegal rental operators who do not pay taxes or fees, which places an unfair burden on legitimate businesses that are already struggling with high insurance rates and loan interests.
In addressing these concerns, LTA Board Chair Inosi Kuridrani acknowledged the pressing issues highlighted by rental car operators and assured that the Authority is committed to reviewing existing policies. He encouraged rental companies to maintain engagement with the LTA, with the aim of building a safer and more equitable transportation system in Fiji.
This situation reflects broader challenges faced by various transport sectors in Fiji, with past discussions also touching on issues of illegal taxi operations that affect licensed operators. Similar to instances raised by the Fiji Taxi Association, the ongoing dialogue between transport operators and regulatory bodies suggests a collaborative effort is underway to reform and enhance the transportation landscape.
As engagement continues, there is a hopeful outlook for the rental car sector and related industries, suggesting that with constructive dialogue and regulatory reviews, a more balanced and fair operating environment may emerge, benefitting both operators and the communities they serve.
