Kubulau in Bua has become the latest remote district in Fiji to gain access to satellite internet connectivity, an initiative expected to enhance communication and service delivery within the area. The official launching of the Starlink Satellite Internet Project took place at the Kubulau Government Station, positioning the district among ten selected sites for this crucial project, largely due to its geographic remoteness and its function in essential government coordination.

This initiative is anticipated to significantly improve interaction between government officials and the communities, allowing for better dissemination of information and access to services. Alongside the internet rollout, a financial literacy training session aimed at boosting economic participation was conducted for villagers from nearby communities, including Nadivakarua, Nakorovou, Natokalau, Kiobo, and Waisa.

The training, delivered in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of Fiji, focused on digital financial services and personal finance management, further reinforcing the commitment to support digital inclusion and resilience in rural regions through improved access to technology.

Funded under the UNDP Pacific’s Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific Programme and in partnership with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, this project aligns with broader governmental efforts to bridge the digital divide across Fiji, as seen in other areas such as Naviavia village.

In Naviavia, the introduction of Starlink internet has been pivotal during cyclone seasons, providing residents with better communication capabilities. As similar projects unfold, including the planned establishment of multiple Starlink sites nationwide, there’s a shared vision of fostering greater socioeconomic opportunities and community resilience.

The advancements in satellite internet connectivity will not only empower communities with information and services but also symbolize a significant step toward a digitally inclusive future for Fiji. This enhanced connectivity opens doors for economic development, education, and overall community well-being, positioning these remote areas for a brighter tomorrow.
