Opposition MP Premila Kumar has voiced strong condemnation for the recent desecration of the Holy Ramayan and urged authorities to investigate and prosecute those responsible. The incident, which occurred during the initial celebrations of Ram Naumi, has raised concerns about growing religious intolerance in Fiji.
Kumar described the desecration as a deliberate act aimed at hurting the sentiments of the Hindu community, particularly at a time when people are engaged in prayers celebrating the birth of Lord Ram. She highlighted a troubling incident where a temple in Bayview Heights was pelted with stones during prayers, indicating a distressing trend of disrespect towards sacred spaces.
Referring to this incident and others, Kumar emphasized that many acts of intolerance go unreported, which contributes to a rising tide of hate. She criticized some leaders for their silence on such matters and called for accountability, stating that failing to act will only encourage further division within communities.
In the context of this growing concern, Kumar advocates for unity among all faith groups to combat intolerance and promote healing within society. This echoes sentiments expressed by other leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad, who have similarly condemned acts of sacrilege and called for decisive action.
As the community grapples with these issues, the hope remains that through dialogue and cooperation, Fiji can foster an environment of respect and unity, reinforcing shared values amid the diversity of its faiths. Engaging in constructive conversations during significant religious observances could pave the way for a more tolerant and harmonious society, underscoring the importance of mutual respect in a multi-ethnic nation.
