Litia Matia, a Learning Development Specialist at the Housing Authority of Fiji, has earned the ‘Advocates Influencing Mindsets & Mentoring Agents Award’ for her outstanding dedication to recycling efforts. The award was conferred by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica during the Global Recycling Day celebrations held at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
Matia’s commitment to recycling advocacy has been notably supported through the Pacific Recycling Foundation’s ‘I Recycle’ program, in partnership with USAID’s Clean Cities, Blue Ocean initiative. She participated in extensive recycling training organized by the Foundation and took her advocacy beyond the workplace, engaging women from five coastal villages in the tikina of Nakorotubu, Province of Ra. These women are now actively involved in collecting, cleaning, sorting, and storing recyclables, significantly contributing to sustainable waste management in their communities.
Amitesh Deo, founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, praised Matia’s impactful work, stating that her efforts exemplify how individual advocacy can lead to meaningful change. “Her passion and dedication have transformed recycling practices within the Housing Authority of Fiji and empowered women in remote villages to take ownership of sustainable waste management,” he remarked.
The AMMA Award, which Matia received, is an annual accolade recognizing individuals who excel in promoting recycling and influencing positive behavior change in sustainable practices. The Pacific Recycling Foundation continues to endorse and support local advocates like Matia, emphasizing that their initiatives drive impactful community engagement in recycling efforts.
The acknowledgment of Matia signifies an encouraging trend towards empowering individuals to spearhead grassroots movements that promote environmental sustainability. Such initiatives foster a culture of recycling and eco-conscious behavior, highlighting the collective responsibility in addressing waste management challenges and paving the way for a cleaner future for Fiji.
