Fiji experienced a notably cold morning in recent history, with temperatures in Nadarivatu dropping to 8.3 degrees Celsius on June 9, 2025. This marks the lowest temperature recorded in the area since 1987. The Fiji Meteorological Service pointed out that the last similar temperature was recorded at 8.0 °C on July 20, 1986.

The cold snap affected several parts of the country. Major centers reported significant drops, with temperatures of 17.5°C in Navua, 18°C in Nadi, 14.6°C in Ba, 11.8°C in Monasavu, 12.5°C in Labasa, and 15.7°C in Lakeba. The meteorological experts attributed this chilly occurrence to a prevailing southerly wind flow, which brings dry and cool air—a pattern common during Fiji’s dry season from May to October.

A spokesperson from the Fiji Meteorological Service noted that this pattern is typical during the dry months and indicated that similar low temperatures are anticipated to last through early the following week as the current weather system remains stable.

In light of this weather phenomenon, it’s a good reminder of the importance of being prepared for temperature fluctuations, even in tropical regions. As climate patterns continue to shift, residents and visitors alike may find themselves adjusting their activities accordingly. Despite the chill, this weather also provides an opportunity for community gatherings around cozy fires and enjoying the unique beauty of a cool Fijian night.
