The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has announced that the Rarawai Mill is set to reopen tomorrow after undergoing significant restoration work following a fire that damaged its powerhouse on September 17. According to FSC Chief Executive Officer Bhan Pratap Singh, all critical repairs and safety measures have been successfully completed, which allows the mill to safely resume operations.
Singh emphasized that rigorous restoration efforts, safety assessments, and operational readiness checks have been finalized to ensure the facility is adequately prepared for safe and efficient milling. He stated, “Our teams have met every safety and operational requirement ahead of reopening, and we are confident the mill is ready.”
The FSC has confirmed the completion of all major maintenance stemming from the incident, with only minor tasks remaining that will not hinder the start-up or continuity of cane crushing operations. Throughout the repair process, engineering and technical teams maintained close collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure compliance and safety.
Farmers will be able to resume normal cane deliveries to the mill starting tomorrow, with FSC field staff coordinating efforts with growers and supply gangs. Singh reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to supporting growers and ensuring a steady supply for the duration of the crushing season.
“Our focus now is on maintaining operational stability and delivering smooth, consistent milling operations going forward,” Singh added, highlighting the optimism surrounding the reopening of the mill. The restoration of the Rarawai Mill represents a significant step towards re-establishing normalcy for local sugar growers and the wider community, fostering hope for a successful remainder of the crushing season.
