Arinesh Kumar, a seasoned name in Fiji’s local rap scene, is looking to inspire and collaborate with up-and-coming artists as he continues to develop his musical journey. With eight years of experience under his belt, Kumar hopes to bring fresh voices into the rap world, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and community in the music industry.
The Fijian rap landscape features a diverse group of artists including Mr Grin, Sammy G, Red Child, and the international talent Jesswar, who has made waves in the Australian music scene. Kumar highlights the unique qualities of local rap artists, whose lyrics often celebrate their roots and serve as motivation for youth.
Kumar, also known as Iyo Fiji Born, expresses a deep appreciation for fellow artists and seeks to foster collaboration, particularly among iTaukei and Indian rappers, noting that their diverse musical expressions can enrich the hip-hop culture in Fiji. “In hip-hop, there are many genres to explore, and I cater to all,” he says.
His recent works, such as “Yiji Kaha, Fiji Yaha” and “Laws of Life,” reflect his personal experiences and offer social commentary, blending English, Hindi, and iTaukei into his music. Kumar underscores the need for a proper platform to showcase local talent, advocating for events like rap battles that can enhance the hip-hop scene and provide visibility to undiscovered artists who may fear public judgment.
Aiming to make music a source of inspiration and a tool for personal expression, Kumar wants to encourage those around him, especially the youth, that through faith and perseverance, they can achieve their dreams. “It is possible,” he believes, as he shares his journey from feeling isolated to finding community and connection through music.
The future looks bright for Kumar and the Fijian rap scene, as momentum grows for collaboration, support, and innovation within the industry. His commitment to uplift fellow artists is an encouraging sign of the evolving musical landscape in Fiji.
There is hope that with continued efforts and community spirit, more talents will emerge and thrive, making the Fijian music scene a vibrant and globally recognized entity.
