As a journalist in Fiji, I have always felt a deep responsibility to ensure our government remains accountable. This duty is a cornerstone of our profession, given the media’s significant role in shaping society and driving change. My beliefs and experiences were profoundly challenged during my recent participation in Germany’s “Freedom of the Media” program, which prompted me to reflect on the realities of media in Fiji and the hurdles we face in our quest for truth.

This was not my first visit to Germany, but it provided transformative insights into press freedom and its essential role in a democratic framework. The program gathered journalists from diverse backgrounds, serving as a platform to exchange our stories, challenges, and ideas for cultivating independent media. It was enlightening to learn from one another rather than merely glorifying German media practices.

A standout moment from my trip was attending the Bundespressekonferenz (BPK) in Berlin. Here, government officials answered challenging questions posed by journalists. I was inspired by the bravery of my German counterparts, who engaged in this dialogue fearlessly, in stark contrast to the media landscape back home. The political atmosphere in the United States, marked by tensions following former President Donald Trump’s re-election candidacy, felt at odds with the calm civility observed in Berlin, where discussions about politics occurred without the undercurrent of panic.

This disparity further highlighted the conditions under which we operate in Fiji, especially as the current coalition government has pledged greater transparency and openness. While there have been talks of regular press conferences to ensure accountability, these ideas have often slipped away without concrete action.

Fiji’s journalists have long fought under the constraints of the Media Industry Development Act (MIDA), which instilled fear and led to self-censorship. Hope emerged with the recent repeal of MIDA, a welcome change to which many within the media are still adapting. The challenge ahead lies in harnessing this progress to foster a truly independent media environment.

While in Germany, my interactions with fellow journalists highlighted their remarkable courage in the face of adversity. For instance, I learned about Karyn Maughan, whose investigations into corruption risks led to personal legal battles. This story exemplified the importance of investigative journalism in holding authorities accountable, a sentiment echoed in another journalist’s experience from Myanmar, who continues to report despite facing imminent dangers in a repressive regime.

My time in Germany also allowed me to visit organizations dedicated to defending press freedom, such as Reporters Without Borders and the German Journalists’ Association. These entities work tirelessly to uphold the rights of journalists, reinforcing the critical nature of a free press, a principle I am committed to advancing in Fiji.

This program equipped me with invaluable insights, especially regarding the challenges posed by social media to traditional journalism while also recognizing its potential to enhance audience engagement.

Returning to Fiji, I feel invigorated and resolute in my mission. Though progress has been made, there is still considerable work ahead. The lessons from this experience compel me to advocate for a transparent, independent media landscape in Fiji, one where the truth flourishes and journalists function free from governmental interference.

Understanding the fundamental role of press freedom in upholding democracy and human rights is more crucial than ever. My commitment to this cause is steadfast, as is my resolve to support fellow journalists in their similar pursuits.

This journey has illuminated the shared goal we all possess: the quest for truth and the safeguarding of press freedom. The inspiration I’ve gained from my international peers encourages me to advance press freedom in Fiji actively.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Goethe-Institut, the Federal government, the Federal Foreign Office, and the German Embassy in Fiji for their support during my time in Germany. Special thanks to facilitators Rella Prokoph and Tomasz Filochowski for their excellent guidance throughout this enriching experience.

As I proceed with my work in Fiji, I will carry the valuable lessons learned and remain committed to fostering an environment where journalists can operate freely, as a free press is vital for empowering citizens to make informed decisions.

In summary, the experience has not only strengthened my resolve but has also reaffirmed the universal importance of journalists fulfilling their role as guardians of truth. With collective effort, we can build a more transparent, accountable media landscape in Fiji.
