The process of selecting a new Commissioner of Police is currently underway, as confirmed by Prime Minister and Chair of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), Sitiveni Rabuka. A selection committee has been formed by the COC to evaluate the 29 applications received for the position.

Rabuka stated that the COC is scheduled to reconvene on December 16 to discuss the shortlisted candidates. He noted, “We have selected the selection panel.” The COC meets regularly on the third Thursday of every month, with the next meeting planned for December 16.

The appointment of the Commissioner of Police is governed by Section 129(4) of the Constitution, which stipulates that the President makes the appointment based on the COC’s recommendations, after consulting with the minister in charge of the Fiji Police Force.

Among the candidates expressing interest for the position are notable figures such as former Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu, acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, and UN Assistant Secretary General Unaisi Vuniwaqa. Additionally, Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Major General Jone Kalouniwai has emphasized the urgency of appointing a new Commissioner to ensure stability and morale within the Fiji Police Force.

This selection process not only highlights the commitment to maintaining strong leadership within the Fiji Police Force, but it also underscores the importance of stability in law enforcement for the broader community. With thoughtful deliberation and a diverse pool of applicants, there is hope that the new Commissioner will bring fresh perspectives and strengthened support to the police force and its initiatives.

In summary, the COC is taking significant steps in selecting a successor for the Commissioner of Police, with a commitment to thoroughness and community safety at the forefront.
