Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has announced an ambitious goal to achieve clean and affordable energy, aiming for at least 90 percent of its energy needs to be sourced from renewable resources by 2035.
Acting EFL Chief Executive Bobby Naimawi explained that the company is actively identifying and developing various sustainable and economically viable projects to meet this target. One notable initiative under investigation is the Namosi Hydro-electric scheme, where EFL is currently conducting a feasibility study.
Preliminary assessments indicate the potential for several small hydro-electric projects in the Namosi region, and EFL is building upon these findings. Naimawi noted that the next steps will depend on the outcomes of the feasibility study, which is evaluating three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi, along with the necessary high-voltage infrastructure to distribute power to major electricity load centers.
The feasibility study aims to analyze the technical feasibility, commercial viability, and environmental and social impacts of the proposed hydro-power projects and associated infrastructure. Launched in 2024, the study is expected to last up to two years and will be executed in two phases:
Phase 1 involves a scoping and options analysis, exploring various project scenarios and configurations. Phase 2 will focus on a shortlisted set of project options, conducting detailed technical, environmental, and social assessments.
Throughout the feasibility study, the impact of the hydro-power scheme will be evaluated in accordance with international standards and best practices, emphasizing the assessment of social and economic benefits. Naimawi stated that the study will prioritize projects that do not inundate populated areas or culturally significant sites, ensuring that no existing settlements or villages are displaced as a result of the proposed hydro-power projects.
Consultants, funded by development partners, are conducting the feasibility study and engaging closely with key stakeholders to gather input from those who may be affected prior to the development of these projects. Naimawi emphasized that the findings from the feasibility study will play a crucial role in shaping Fiji’s renewable energy roadmap in alignment with the National Development Plan.
