Fiji’s Push for Local Elections: A Game Changer for Women in Politics?

Fiji’s Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister, Lenora Qereqeretabua, announced plans to hold local government elections next year, viewing this as a crucial step for increasing women’s participation in politics. Speaking at a women’s forum in Apia, Samoa, Ms. Qereqeretabua highlighted the underrepresentation of women in the Fijian Parliament, emphasizing the need for change.

“We haven’t had local government elections in Fiji since 2005,” she stated, noting that the elections are slated for next year or the following year. She pointed out that facilitating local government elections is recognized globally as an important initial step for women’s engagement in political processes.

Ms. Qereqeretabua also referenced a recent mock women’s parliament initiative in Fiji, which saw over 100 applicants competing for 58 positions, including roles in both the opposition and government as well as the position of speaker. Despite the low representation of women in Parliament, she encouraged empowerment among women, urging them to make opportunities available for others.

The Commonwealth Women’s Forum, where these discussions took place, concluded yesterday.
