The Commission of Inquiry (CoI) responsible for reviewing the appointment of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner has officially delivered its final report to Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Naiqama Lalabalavu, at State House. Sole Commissioner Justice David Ashton-Lewis, alongside Commission Counsel Assisting, Ms. Janet Mason, presented the findings after an extensive process involving hearings, document reviews, and multiple testimonies.

Established in October 2024, the inquiry’s purpose was to investigate whether protocols were followed during the appointment of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali, identify any breaches of legal or ethical standards, and assess the implications for the integrity of the anti-corruption agency. Following the report handover, President Lalabalavu acknowledged the Commission’s rigorous work, noting its potential to enhance accountability and transparency across public institutions.

“The Commission’s work aligns with the national objective of restoring public confidence in our democratic processes and institutions,” the President remarked, confirming he would await guidance from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka regarding the report’s publication and implementation of recommendations.

In conjunction with this report, which is anticipated to be submitted to Prime Minister Rabuka, the findings hold significant implications for improving governance practices in Fiji. The inquiry’s emphasis on rigorous appointment processes underscores a hopeful trajectory toward enhanced institutional integrity.

As stakeholders look forward to the recommendations, there is optimism that they will pave the way for essential reforms within Fiji’s political landscape, thus fostering greater trust in government operations. This inquiry symbolizes a pivotal moment for the nation, reinforcing its commitment to uphold democratic principles and restore public confidence in governance.
