Fiji’s PSH Hospital Performs Life-Saving Heart Surgery, Reducing Need to Travel Abroad

After enduring months of severe chest pain, 58-year-old Harish Chand received a vital life-saving heart surgery at Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) in Nadi, Fiji. This hospital has positioned itself as a leading provider of advanced cardiac care, significantly reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.

Chand first began experiencing intense chest pain earlier this year, which led him to Tavua Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a minor heart attack. An angiogram conducted in Suva revealed multiple heart blockages. Despite being placed on a waiting list for nearly four months for surgery, his condition deteriorated, and the surgeon assigned to his case traveled overseas.

The turning point came when Chand’s daughter discovered a post about PSH’s cardiac services on Facebook. He was quickly evaluated by Dr. Sanjeev Khulbey, a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon. Dr. Khulbey noted that Chand’s case was high-risk but assured the family that their hospital had the required expertise and technology for a successful outcome.

Following the operation, Chand expressed profound relief and gratitude, stating, “I feel as though I have been given my life back. Before, I couldn’t eat, walk, or even talk properly. Now I feel healthy again.” His wife, Gyan, echoed these sentiments, sharing her fears before the procedure and her overwhelming gratitude once it was deemed successful.

Chand highlighted that traveling abroad for surgery was not an option due to his frail state and ongoing pain. “Thanks to PSH Hospitals, I received world-class treatment right here in Fiji. I’m forever grateful,” he remarked.

Parvish Kumar, CEO of PSH Hospitals, emphasized that Chand’s experience resonates with the facility’s mission of providing world-class healthcare services locally. Dr. Khulbey attributed the success of Chand’s surgery to timely intervention and advanced technology available at PSH, stating that the hospital is equipped to deliver care comparable to that found abroad.

Moreover, PSH now offers emergency cardiac services at its Nadi branch, which not only alleviates prolonged waiting periods but also mitigates costly overseas referrals. Chand’s successful recovery serves as a testament to the enhanced healthcare capabilities within Fiji, bringing hope to both local patients requiring critical treatment and the overall community.

This trend in local healthcare advancements mirrors recent successes at PSH, where other patients have also benefited from timely and effective cardiac interventions, illustrating a growing sentiment of optimism regarding accessible healthcare services within the region. As these facilities expand and evolve, Fiji emerges not only as a destination for health tourism but as a beacon of hope for patients seeking life-saving treatments closer to home.
