The Public Service Commission (PSC) of Fiji, led by Chairperson Luke Rokovada, is set to launch a mandatory training program aimed at increasing awareness of domestic and gender-based violence among public servants. This initiative follows the tragic death of Sainimere Tuinasakea, an employee of the Department of Immigration, which Rocovada condemned as a devastating reminder of the prevalence of such violence in society.

Rokovada emphasized the PSC’s zero-tolerance stance against all forms of gender-based violence and stressed the urgent need for heightened awareness and preventive measures within the workforce. He remarked, “No one should ever have to endure such violence,” highlighting the pressing need for continued action across all sectors to ensure the safety and dignity of women in Fiji.

In addition to extending condolences to Tuinasakea’s family and friends, Rokovada encouraged any public servant experiencing domestic violence to seek assistance through the toll-free helpline 1560. He called upon all citizens to unite in tackling this escalating issue and to support initiatives that aim to protect women and girls, thus fostering a safer environment.

This initiative aligns with the ongoing concerns surrounding domestic violence raised by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, who earlier spotlighted the far-reaching consequences of such violence, especially on children. Kiran’s advocacy for community prevention committees and stronger educational resources complements Rokovada’s call for collective action and education.

The commitment from the PSC to implement these training programs echoes various sentiments from recent reports emphasizing the importance of community involvement and proactive measures in preventing domestic violence. As these conversations intensify, there is a hopeful atmosphere surrounding the potential for significant cultural change in Fiji, aimed at creating an environment where every home is a safe refuge.

Together, these efforts represent a growing recognition of the need to address domestic violence seriously and to implement systematic reforms that prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals within the community.
