The Ministry of Employment in Fiji has reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding Fijian workers involved in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme from any form of exploitation. Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh assured that the Ministry is actively addressing issues related to the alleged mistreatment of Fijian laborers by foreign employers.
He emphasized the Ministry’s proactive measures, citing the introduction of regular visits and the appointment of country liaison officers as significant steps forward in resolving the workers’ concerns. During recent visits, Minister Singh and his team engaged with both employers and workers, with an effort to address issues particularly in areas where negative reports had emerged. Although the Ministry oversees 331 workplaces across Australia, they focus on regions identified in complaints to maximize their outreach and support.
Furthermore, Minister Singh assured that the same labor standards are implemented equally for all workers in Fiji, whether they are local or foreign, ensuring fair treatment across the board.
This focused approach not only aims to enhance the conditions for Fijian workers abroad but also promotes a more equitable work environment at home, reflecting a commitment to uphold the rights and welfare of all workers in Fiji.
Overall, it is encouraging to see the Fijian government take proactive measures to ensure fair treatment and protection for its workers on an international platform, promoting a positive and supportive environment in the labor sector.
