Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that he is unaware of the reasons why Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Fiji Corrections Commissioner, has been placed on leave, a situation announced earlier today. During a press briefing, Rabuka mentioned that he would wait for the Commission of Corrections (COC) Secretariat to provide him with information following a briefing from the Minister for Justice, which is anticipated to take place later this afternoon.
“The details will be shared with me,” Rabuka said. He noted that Dr. Nakarawa’s leave may be extended to facilitate preliminary internal investigations so that the Minister can make appropriate recommendations to the COC.
This development comes amid reports of serious incidents and potential breaches within the Fiji Corrections Service, prompting the Ministry of Justice to conduct an investigation into the matter.
This situation highlights the importance of transparency and accountability within governmental organizations. As investigations unfold, they may lead to necessary reforms that could enhance the operational integrity of the Corrections Service, ultimately benefiting the community.
Future reports will elaborate on this unfolding story, providing more context and updates as they become available.
