Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has described recent international media reports regarding suspected alcohol poisoning at the Warrick Fiji Resort as “highly exaggerated.” In a press conference, he emphasized the need to combat misinformation to protect Fiji’s reputation as an appealing travel destination.
Last weekend, a group of seven guests from a resort situated on Fiji’s Coral Coast was admitted to Sigatoka Hospital after exhibiting symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological distress. They were later transferred to Aspen Lautoka Hospital. The guests had reportedly consumed Pina Colada cocktails from the Suva Wing Bar at the resort, while other patrons who had the same drink at different venues went unharmed. This discrepancy led the Prime Minister and his administration to seek clarity to counter any potential misconceptions.
Rabuka reassured the public, stating, “It’s safe to come to Fiji,” and questioned the motives behind the negative media coverage, suggesting that competitors in the tourism sector might be behind the unfavorable reports. He insisted that the incident is isolated and does not represent a broader threat to Fiji’s tourism industry.
In support of the Prime Minister’s reassurances, Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka revealed that recent toxicology reports found no illicit substances or methanol in the liquor samples related to the incident.
