Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged Pacific leaders and law enforcement officials in the Micronesian region, particularly in Kiribati, to take advantage of the police recruitment training programs available in Fiji.
During his keynote speech at the recent CHOGM 2024 Pacific Policing Event held in Samoa, Mr. Rabuka emphasized that the invitation extends not only to Kiribati but also to other small island nations interested in training opportunities in Fiji.
“My initial approach was to invite our brothers and sisters in Micronesia, especially from Kiribati, to re-engage with the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), and we offered their Prime Minister assistance by sending training teams from the Fiji Police to support their police services,” Mr. Rabuka stated.
He also mentioned that several island police forces have been sending their recruits to train in Fiji.
“We continue to welcome this offer, not just for Kiribati, but for any island nations that wish to benefit from our training facilities in Fiji,” he noted.
The Prime Minister highlighted that Fiji’s security forces engage in training with special forces and military units in the United States, facilitating the training of recruits in Fiji.
“I have a friend who runs an institution there, and he has permitted me to use his facilities to train our security personnel, and we will maintain this partnership,” he said.
Furthermore, Mr. Rabuka expressed willingness to extend these training opportunities to VIP security officers or police protection officers, emphasizing the support Fiji can provide in times of need.
Today, the Prime Minister, along with three other Pacific leaders, will be visiting Noumea, New Caledonia, as part of a mandate from the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum to support the nation affected by civil unrest earlier this year.
