Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has responded to recent international media reports regarding suspected alcohol poisoning at the Warrick Fiji Resort, describing them as “highly exaggerated.” Rabuka emphasized the necessity of correcting misinformation to protect Fiji’s image as an attractive travel destination.

The incident in question involved seven guests who experienced symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and neurological distress after consuming Pina Colada cocktails at the resort’s Suva Wing Bar. They were initially treated at Sigatoka Hospital and later transferred to Aspen Lautoka Hospital. Importantly, other guests who ordered the same drink from different resort bars did not fall ill, suggesting that this may have been an isolated case.

In his statement to the media, Rabuka reassured the public about the safety of Fiji, urging potential visitors to come to the country without concern. He pointed out that there might be competitors in the tourism sector spreading negative reports about Fiji and called for further investigation into the source of these claims.

Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka supported Rabuka’s comments by announcing that toxicology reports from the incident indicated no illicit substances or methanol were present in the beverages served. This finding further alleviates concerns regarding the safety of Fiji’s hospitality and tourism conditions.

Overall, while the incident has raised alarm, the swift response from the government highlights its commitment to ensuring visitor safety and maintaining Fiji’s reputation as a premier travel destination. The prompt clarification and transparency from officials convey a strong message to the public that such occurrences are being taken seriously and are not reflective of the overall experience in Fiji. Travelers can look forward to enjoying Fiji’s beautiful landscapes and warm hospitality without their safety being compromised.
