Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has described recent international media reports regarding a suspected alcohol poisoning incident at the Warrick Fiji Resort as “highly exaggerated.” In remarks to the press, Rabuka emphasized the necessity of countering misinformation to safeguard Fiji’s image as a premier travel destination.

The incident in question involved seven guests from a resort on Fiji’s Coral Coast, who experienced symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological distress. Initially taken to Sigatoka Hospital, they were later transferred to the Aspen Lautoka Hospital. Notably, all seven individuals had consumed Pina Colada cocktails at the Suva Wing Bar of the resort, while no other guests who drank the same beverage from different resort bars reported any illness.

In response to these developments, the Prime Minister and his government have sought to clarify the situation to mitigate any misconceptions. Rabuka reassured the public, stating, “We would like to tell everybody that it’s safe to come to Fiji,” and also raised concerns about the motivations behind the negative press, questioning if competitors in the tourism sector may be contributing to it.

Rabuka characterized the incident as isolated, affirming that it does not threaten the broader tourism sector in Fiji. He reiterated safety for future visitors to the island nation. Furthermore, this week, Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka noted that a toxicology report confirmed the absence of illicit substances or methanol in the liquor samples related to the suspected poisoning incident.

This situation, while concerning, reaffirms Fiji’s commitment to ensuring tourist safety and maintaining its reputation as a welcoming destination. The government’s proactive stance in addressing misinformation is essential in building public confidence and supporting the resilient recovery of the tourism industry.

In summary, while there was an incident involving some guests, the swift actions of the Fijian authorities in clarifying the situation and confirming the safety of the resort demonstrate their dedication to transparency and visitor wellbeing. This reinforces a hopeful message for potential tourists considering Fiji as their next vacation spot.
