Fiji’s Presidential Transition: Who’s Next?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the current Speaker of Parliament, will be the Government’s nominee for Fiji’s new President when parliament meets at the end of this month. This decision comes after the incumbent, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, officially withdrew his candidacy for a second term.

In a statement released early this morning, Mr. Rabuka explained that he sought Ratu Wiliame’s consent on October 17, 2024, to be nominated for another term based on Section 84(2) of the Constitution of Fiji. However, on October 21, Ratu Wiliame communicated his decision to withdraw from the nomination process.

Mr. Rabuka also paid tribute to Ratu Wiliame for his dedicated service to the nation. He commended Ratu Wiliame for executing his duties with integrity and maintaining a smooth governmental transition following the December 2022 general election. The Prime Minister highlighted Ratu Wiliame’s commitment to upholding the Constitution and fostering unprecedented freedom for the people of Fiji during his tenure.

Mr. Rabuka expressed that Ratu Wiliame has exemplified the unity and integrity of the State, both domestically and internationally, and emphasized his openness by welcoming all Fijians to State House and undertaking significant diplomatic efforts. A formal ceremony will be held to honor Ratu Wiliame in accordance with traditional customs at the conclusion of his term.
