The Office of the President represents unity and should be approached with extensive consultation to consider the diverse aspirations of all Fijians, according to Sepesa Rasili, president of the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS). His comments came in light of the recent nomination of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for the presidency.
Rasili acknowledged the current President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere’s decision to withdraw as a nominee, respecting his choice and commending his exemplary service. He noted that during Katonivere’s leadership, he exhibited remarkable diplomacy, particularly during the transition of power at the end of 2022.
Rasili highlighted that President Katonivere leaves a legacy marked by dedication, stability, and unity, and now has the chance to focus on his responsibilities as head of the vanua o Caumatalevu.
While recognizing the Prime Minister’s right to nominate candidates as per the Fijian Constitution, Rasili emphasized the need for this decision to align with public expectations. He stated that the Prime Minister’s choice should serve the nation’s best interests, taking into account the people’s voices and the significant responsibilities tied to the presidency.
