Fiji’s Presidential Transition: A New Era Begins

The Fijian government has nominated Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, also known as Na Turaga na Tui Cakau, for the position of Head of State and President of Fiji. This announcement follows the withdrawal of the current President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, from the Prime Minister’s nomination for a second term as President.

In a statement released at midnight, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka revealed that he had consulted with the Parliamentary Caucus of the People’s Alliance, which formally endorsed Ratu Naiqama for the presidential nomination. Rabuka confirmed that Turaga na Tui Cakau has given his consent to be nominated.

The Prime Minister plans to submit Ratu Naiqama’s name under section 84(2) of the Constitution during a special parliamentary session scheduled for next Thursday.

On October 17, 2024, Rabuka had requested President Ratu Wiliame’s approval to be nominated for a second term. However, on October 21, he received a formal communication from Ratu Wiliame withdrawing his name from the nomination.

Rabuka praised Ratu Wiliame for his service to the nation, noting that he performed his duties as Head of State with integrity and poise. His leadership ensured a smooth government transition following the December 2022 general election.

To honor Ratu Wiliame’s contributions, a formal ceremony will be held to express the nation’s gratitude in line with traditional protocols at the conclusion of his term.

The Prime Minister has urged all Fijians to rally together with him and the Coalition Government to foster social cohesion, peace, unity, stability, and prosperity in the country.
