Fiji’s Presidential Transition: A Legacy Remembered

His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata, has officially withdrawn his candidacy for a second term as President. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed this decision, explaining that he had sought Ratu Wiliame’s consent for re-nomination on October 17, 2024, in accordance with section 84(2) of the Constitution.

However, on October 21, 2024, Rabuka received a formal notification from Ratu Wiliame, stating his decision to decline the nomination for another term.

Rabuka praised Ratu Wiliame for his service to the nation, highlighting his integrity and forbearance as Head of State. He noted that Ratu Wiliame played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth government transition following the December 2022 general election and maintained a strong adherence to the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji, despite pressures against it.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Ratu Wiliame’s presidency has been marked by significant freedoms for the citizens of Fiji and that he has embodied the nation’s unity and integrity both domestically and internationally. During his time in office, Ratu Wiliame opened State House to all Fijians and performed important diplomatic duties with grace.

Rabuka announced that a formal ceremony, known as vakasenuqanuqa, will be held to express the nation’s gratitude to Ratu Wiliame in line with traditional customs at the conclusion of his term. The appointment of Fiji’s next President is scheduled to take place during a Special Sitting of Parliament on October 31, 2024.
