The Office of the President represents a unifying force and must be approached with inclusive consultation, taking into account the diverse aspirations of all Fijians. Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) president Sepesa Rasili made this statement following the recent nomination of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for the presidency.

Rasili acknowledged the decision of the current President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, to withdraw his candidacy, expressing respect for his wishes and appreciation for the exceptional service he has provided. He noted that during Katonivere’s leadership, he showcased remarkable diplomacy, especially during the transitional period after the power transfer in late 2022.

Rasili highlighted that Katonivere’s legacy reflects dedication, stability, and unity. As he steps down from office, Rasili stated that he will now have the chance to focus on his responsibilities as the head of the vanua o Caumatalevu.

While acknowledging the Prime Minister’s right to nominate candidates as per the Fijian Constitution, Rasili emphasized the importance of these decisions aligning with public expectations. He stressed that the Prime Minister’s choices should be made in the nation’s best interest, considering the voices of the people and the significant responsibilities associated with the presidential role.
