Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Cabinet has approved the Presidential Pensions (Amendment) Bill 2024 for presentation in Parliament. In his statement, Rabuka highlighted that this Bill seeks to modify the Presidential Pensions Act of 1994 in order to adjust the President’s term from five years to three years, in accordance with the provisions of the 2013 Constitution.

The Presidential Pensions Act of 1994 establishes the legal guidelines regarding pensions and various benefits for former Governors-General and Presidents of Fiji.

This amendment reflects a commitment to uphold constitutional provisions and enhance the governance framework in Fiji, promoting a responsive political environment. With the proposed changes, there is potential for more frequent leadership transitions, which could invigorate political discourse and engagement among citizens.
