Fiji’s President Withdraws: A Legacy of Integrity and Unity

His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata, has officially stepped back from seeking a second term as President.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed that on October 17, 2024, he had reached out to Ratu Wiliame, requesting his agreement for re-nomination as stipulated in section 84(2) of the Constitution. However, on October 21, 2024, Rabuka received a formal notification from Ratu Wiliame regarding his decision to withdraw from consideration for another term.

“I would like to honor His Excellency the President Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere and recognize his contributions to our nation as President,” Rabuka remarked.

He praised Ratu Wiliame for his integrity and patience while serving as Head of State, noting his role in facilitating a smooth governmental transition after the December 2022 general election.

Rabuka emphasized that Ratu Wiliame was committed to upholding the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji, despite pressures from those who attempted to challenge his principles. His presidency was distinguished by significant freedom for the Fijian people, and he has represented the unity and integrity of the state nationally and internationally.

During his tenure, Ratu Wiliame opened State House to all citizens of Fiji and undertook crucial diplomatic missions with grace and dignity.

Rabuka announced that a formal vakasenuqanuqa ceremony will be organized to show the nation’s appreciation for Ratu Wiliame Katonivere in line with traditional customs at the conclusion of his term.

Fiji’s next President is set to be appointed during a Special Sitting of Parliament on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
