Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, is currently in New York for the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Prior to the UNGA, he was welcomed with a traditional ceremony by the Fijian community in New York.
In his speech, President Katonivere expressed deep appreciation for the warm welcome given to him and his delegation. He acknowledged the critical role that the financial support from the Fijian diaspora plays in the economic development of Fiji.
He also recognized the contributions of Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Filipo Tarakinikini, praising his leadership in promoting Fiji’s interests globally. President Katonivere remarked that the presence of the diaspora at the ceremony signifies the unity of Fijian families living abroad.
“Even though they are far from home, they continue to carry Fiji in their hearts, strengthening the connection between overseas Fijians and their homeland,” he stated.
The event was also attended by Assistant Minister for Finance Esrom Immanuel and Fiji’s Ambassador to the United States, Ratu Ilisoni Vudireketi. President Katonivere’s engagement in the UNGA emphasizes Fiji’s commitment to global cooperation, sustainable development, and the pursuit of peace and progress for all.
