Fiji’s newly inaugurated President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has called upon the nation’s chiefs to embrace accountability and take initiative within their communities. During his first address at the State House, he emphasized the significance of self-reliance and responsibility in leadership, encouraging chiefs to lead by example rather than dependent on others.

Speaking to a delegation from the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) who were present for his welcome, Ratu Naiqama stressed the need for chiefs to be proactive. He stated that true strength and authority come from being self-sufficient. His remarks were particularly timely, coinciding with the start of a two-day GCC meeting at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.

Ratu Naiqama stated that chiefs should actively contribute to community initiatives, such as fundraising efforts, and be visible in their commitment to supporting their people. He criticized what he described as a “free-rider” mentality that some chiefs exhibit, underscoring that effective leadership requires hard work and dedication. “It’s no longer time for free rides. You need to sweat for your own food and drink,” he remarked.

Additionally, he pointed out the essential role of education in fostering effective leadership, urging chiefs to not only articulate their values but also to embody them in their actions.

This strong message from President Ratu Naiqama highlights a hopeful vision for Fijian leadership, focusing on accountability, community service, and self-improvement. By taking these steps, the chiefs can become role models within their communities, ultimately fostering a culture of empowerment and resilience in Fiji.

Summary: Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, Fiji’s new President, urges chiefs to take responsibility and lead by example, emphasizing self-reliance and the importance of education in effective leadership.
