Fiji’s Presidency Pops: Ratu Wiliame Bids Farewell!

His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, known as Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata, has officially stepped back from the opportunity to serve a second term as President of Fiji.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed this development, revealing that on October 17, 2024, he had written to Ratu Wiliame to seek his consent for re-nomination as outlined in section 84(2) of the Constitution. However, on Monday, October 21, 2024, the Prime Minister received a formal notice from Ratu Wiliame regarding his decision to withdraw his name from consideration for another term.

Prime Minister Rabuka expressed his respect and appreciation for Ratu Wiliame’s presidency, acknowledging his dedicated service to the nation. He praised Ratu Wiliame for fulfilling his role with integrity and patience, highlighting his leadership during the government transition that followed the December 2022 general elections.

Rabuka noted that Ratu Wiliame remained steadfastly committed to upholding the Constitution of Fiji, even amidst pressures from those attempting to challenge his resolve. He emphasized that Ratu Wiliame’s presidency has greatly contributed to unprecedented freedoms for the Fijian populace and has represented the unity and integrity of the nation both domestically and internationally.

Throughout his tenure, Ratu Wiliame welcomed all Fijians at State House, engaging in significant diplomatic initiatives with grace and professionalism. To formally honor Ratu Wiliame’s service, the Prime Minister announced that a ceremonial event will be held in accordance with traditional customs at the conclusion of his term.

The appointment of Fiji’s next President is scheduled to take place during a Special Sitting of Parliament on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
