The Office of the President represents a symbol of unity and should be approached with broad consultations that take into account the diverse aspirations of all Fijians. This statement was made by Sepesa Rasili, president of the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS), in response to the recent nomination of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for the presidency of Fiji.

Rasili highlighted that FCOSS acknowledges the current President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere’s decision to withdraw his nomination. “We respect his wishes and commend the outstanding service he has rendered,” Rasili noted. He praised Katonivere’s leadership, particularly his diplomacy during the transition of power in late 2022.

Rasili described Katonivere’s legacy as one of dedication, stability, and unity. He expressed confidence that the outgoing president would now be able to concentrate on his responsibilities as the chief of the vanua o Caumatalevu.

Further, Rasili emphasized that while the Prime Minister has the prerogative to nominate candidates as stipulated by the Fijian Constitution, it is essential that this choice aligns with the public’s expectations. “Ultimately, the Prime Minister’s decision must be made in the best interest of the nation, with careful consideration of the people’s voices and the responsibilities that come with this significant role,” he concluded.
