The Office of the President represents a symbol of unity and should be approached through extensive consultations, taking into account the diversity and aspirations of all Fijians. Sepesa Rasili, president of the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS), made this statement following the nomination of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for the presidency.

Rasili noted that FCOSS recognized the recent decision of the current President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere to withdraw his name from consideration for reelection. “We respect his wishes and commend the outstanding service he has provided,” he remarked.

He praised Katonivere’s leadership, highlighting his exceptional diplomatic skills, especially during the transitional period after the power transfer in late 2022. “His legacy is one of dedication, stability, and unity. As he steps down, we are confident that he will focus on his chief responsibilities as the leader of the vanua o Caumatalevu.”

Rasili emphasized that while it is within the Prime Minister’s rights to nominate candidates according to the Fijian Constitution, it is vital that this decision reflects the public’s expectations. “Ultimately, the Prime Minister’s decision must indicate that it has been made in the nation’s best interest, with careful regard for the voices of the people and the significant responsibilities associated with this role.”
