Fiji’s Powerlifting Team Readies for Tough Oceania Challenge

The Fiji Powerlifting Federation has announced a strong 10-member team set to compete in the Oceania Regional Powerlifting Championships 2014, taking place in Nauru from October 30 to November 2. This announcement was made yesterday by the general president of the Federation, Viliame Lagonilakeba.

The team will include six athletes and four officials. Lagonilakeba emphasized the challenges that lie ahead, noting that powerlifting is a significant part of Nauru’s cultural heritage and that the country has produced many world champions, making it one of the most formidable powerlifting nations globally. Despite the tough competition, he expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and their eagerness to showcase their skills against the finest in the region.

The Fijian athletes representing the squad include Vivaan Patel in the Men’s sub-junior U83kg, Vinesh Chand in the Men’s Open U74kg, Faga Varea in the Men’s Open U93kg, Muzammil Ali in the Men’s Open U120kg, and Kurt Wise, who will serve as captain in the Men’s Open U120kg category.

The team officials consist of head coach Eric Jioje (non-traveling), Ryan Bale (non-traveling), assistant coach Salacieli Koroi (traveling), and Jessa May Banchod who will act as the team manager and doctor (traveling).
