Fiji’s former world powerlifting champion, Epeli Ligairi, has made an astonishing comeback after facing the prospect of spending his life in a wheelchair due to severe injuries from a motorcycle accident in California on April 6, 1990. Residing in Nabalebale, Vanua Levu, Ligairi credits his remarkable recovery to divine intervention, expressing, “I was a cripple, but I now know that God had a plan for me. That’s why he saved my life.”
In a bold move, Ligairi defied medical advice by prematurely removing the plaster cast from his legs, three months ahead of schedule. Doctors had previously warned him that the damage could lead to amputations, but after taking this risk, he discovered the strength to walk once more. This unexpected turn of events has reignited his aspirations of returning to the powerlifting arena.
At 37, Ligairi has an impressive sports background, being a champion both in Hawaii and a recognized US national and US Air Force powerlifting champion. Notably, he made history in 1981 as the first Pacific Islander to win a world title. However, Ligairi has voiced his concerns over the treatment of athletes returning from competitions, lamenting that Fijian nations often neglect their representatives after international events, while countries like the United States offer substantial support.
Eager for a comeback, Ligairi stated, “Almost everyone still thinks I’m finished. This will be the greatest comeback. I will return and lift with broken hands, legs, and torn ligaments.” His words reflect not only his unyielding spirit but also serve as an inspiring reminder of resilience and self-belief to athletes everywhere.
Ligairi’s story resonates with that of fellow Fijian athletes, such as Taniela Rainibogi, who overcame injury to excel at the Commonwealth Championships. This narrative of resilience highlights a collective spirit and determination that permeates Fijian sports, offering inspiration to aspiring athletes both in Fiji and around the world. The journey of Ligairi and others like him exemplifies hope, showing that with perseverance and faith, challenges can be overcome, and dreams can be realized.
