Fiji’s Port Revamp: A Game Changer for Maritime Security and Efficiency

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has officially launched three significant projects for Fiji Ports Terminal Limited aimed at improving operational efficiency, sustainability, and border security at Lautoka port.

During the announcement, Rabuka noted that these initiatives are part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance critical infrastructure and reflect Fiji’s commitment to sustainable economic development.

The projects include maintenance dredging over an area of 63,624 square meters, which is essential for ensuring Lautoka Port maintains its depth and navigability to accommodate larger vessels.

In addition to the dredging, the plans also involve the construction of a new container yard and a pilot boat project called “Louvaju,” designed to improve maritime control and border security by enabling operations beyond port limits.

Rabuka emphasized the significance of these advancements within Fiji’s wider strategic vision, stating that it is vital for the nation to effectively manage the increasing volume of traffic arriving from both the east and west into its island territories.
