Port Denarau Marina in Fiji has commenced a major expansion project valued at $6 million, aiming to bolster the country’s maritime tourism sector. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, announced that the initiative will add seven new berths to the marina, including Fiji’s first berth for mega yachts, capable of accommodating vessels up to 115 meters in length. This marks the first facility of its kind in the South Pacific.
Through this expansion, the marina will house a total of 62 berths. Among these, 27 will be specifically designated for superyachts exceeding 24 meters, strengthening Fiji’s reputation as a leading maritime tourism destination in the Pacific.
The project includes the extension of a 203-meter jetty and the dredging of the marina basin to enhance safe navigation for these large vessels. An essential part of the development involves collaboration with traditional landowners to ensure community benefits and restricted access.
Economically, the expansion is expected to generate significant benefits. As Gavoka pointed out, the presence of superyachts boosts employment opportunities and income within the local hospitality, retail, transport, and marine service industries. This supports both local communities and suppliers, aligning with the Coalition Government’s vision for inclusive and sustainable tourism growth.
Port Denarau Marina’s expansion positions Fiji as the premier superyacht hub in the South Pacific and promises long-term growth for the tourism and maritime sectors. This development is considered an essential milestone in elevating the country’s standards to compete on a global scale.
This enhanced infrastructure is expected to cater to the rising demand from the international yachting community, attracting more luxury travelers, which in turn supports local economic development and sustainable tourism practices. The initiative underscores the strategic vision of integrating robust tourism infrastructure with sustainable environmental practices, marking a promising advancement in Fiji’s tourism-driven economy.
